Two Trotters took on the notoriously difficult 22 mile JP's Exe to Axe race, named after local running legend John Perratt. The course follows the coast path from Exmouth to Seaton; although hilly all the way, the section to Sidmouth is relatively runnable, with the course becoming uncompromisingly brutal after Sidmouth. Throw in lots of mud and very strong wind and you have a sizeable challenge on your hands!
Capably organised by Sidmouth Running Club. Storm Kathleen delivered 40-knotwinds from the south west for pretty much the whole day and fortunately this was generally a tailwind rather than a headwind, although every now and then it felt quite blustery on the cliff tops. The first half of the run has two sections: Exmouth to Budleigh and Budleigh to Sidmouth and this is fairly benign. Then, after Sidmouth, there are three substantial climbs, starting with Salcombe Hill, on the section to Branscombe. Then one more big climb from Branscombe and the route continues through Beer to the finish.
Ewan Walton 4:37.10. 75th based on a solid first half, managing to run continuously until beyond Sidmouth. Frustratingly though, "it became a tough day at the office, with muscular failure creeping in during the second half and resulting in a much slower time than in previous outings."
Tim Synge 122nd in 5:05.08. delivering an impressive pace of a little over 4mph. "That may not sound a lot, but I am quite pleased with" said Tim. Overall, awesome views and spring flowers were on hand to boost morale through the ordeal, as well as friendly and supportive marshalls.
Cheryl Dunn, Victoria Hales, Darren Petch and Claire Farrar took part in the Power Run at Powderham Castle on Saturday. It was a great run and described as really enjoyable in muddy and breezy conditions.
Results were Cheryl, 2.00.49 90th, for 10miles. In the 5 miler, Victoria 1.13.53, 46th, Darren Petch 1.15.19, 148th, Claire 1.18.02, 154th
Derek Skinner took part in the ABP Southampton Marathon whilst fighting off a cold, with a lack of energy and suffering from snot. With a windy day (especially on those bridges) and some very interesting incline’s it made for a "Just get it done day, no thought of a time".
Derek persevered and felt drained…but a great course and great support from the locals. "I wish I could have appreciated it more". Time 4.49.32. Place 644, of 868 finishers.
