Derek Skinner took part in the 6th edition of the Hampshire Hoppit Trail Marathon on Sunday 20th June. A Half marathon was on offer too. Both races were scenic single lap courses that started and finished at Kingsclere on the Hampshire/Berkshire border. The race routes were predominantly off –road, following famous long distance footpaths including the Wayfarers Walk & the Harrow Way. The elevation would be described as undulating, with two big ascents, the last one coming at 25 miles to the finish!
Every finisher received a unique engraved beer glass and a thirst quenching pint of ‘Hoppit’, a classic ale from the London Brewery. Teetotallers were not left out, receiving an engraved medal to commemorate their fine achievement.
The weather conditions on race day were perfect, with a misty start before clearing helped by a cool breeze. Runners set off in groups of 24 due to covid restrictions.
Derek ran superbly to finish 183rd in a great time of 04:36:39. There were 442 finishers. The event was superbly organised, with very supportive marshals along the route.
James Saunders travelled south to take part in the Gosport Golden Mile & 5K event. The pancake flat out and back course, took the runners along the promenade before trudging through beach shingle around Fort Gilkicker.
Weather conditions were just about perfect for the 10:45 am start. Runners set off 12 at a time with 3 minute intervals between each.
James clocked a time of 00:20:01 to finish 5th. He also won the MV 55-59 age category. There were 55 entrants.
