On Saturday 6th October Sally Ingledew and Sharon Bowman went to Milton Keynes to run The Reverse Enigma Marathon. The event is usually run in a clockwise direction but this one was run in the opposite direction. The sun shone for the entire race comprising 7 laps of Calidicott Lake. Sally running her 98th marathon and closing in on her 'ton' after a layoff through injury completed in 4.30 whilst Fizz suffered illness late in the event but still completed in 4.44.
The Teign Valley Toddle took place on Sunday. The tough 10.25 mile race is in our championship and attracted an impressive 24 Trotters comprising a third of the 73 finishers. Ewan Walton finished 4th in the race in 1.07.43 and was awarded first senior male prize as the three above him were veterans. Albeit unconventional to award prizes in this manner the prize is reward for Ewan who wholeheartedly commits himself to his sport. Mike Eveleigh was 9th in 1.12.10 and 1st M60, Ian Langler 10th in 1.12.48, Mark Hutchins 11th in 1.13.32 and Wiff Taylor was 12th and 2nd M60 in 1.13.52. Wilf has also received news and a medal as he has been crowned British ARC M60 10k Champion for his efforts at the Battle of Sedgemoor 10k back in August. Jacki Woon was 21st and 1st FV45 in 1.18.15 with Bruce Campbell placed 22nd in and identical time. Dan Wride was 26th in 1.20.20, Sarah Schutte 28th in 1.21.20 and Chris Wride 35th in 1.24.27. Other results were Jess Parkes 42nd in 1.28.43, Becky George 44th in 1.29.22, Noel Fowler 46th in 1.31.11, Keith George 47th in 1.31.54, Jim Donovan 48th in 1.32.38, Guy Roberts 50th in 1.33.44, Eleanor Taylor 51st in 1.34.13, Jo Becker 53rd in 1.37.16, Sarah Seymour 57th in 1.39.50, Sharon Hutchins 58th in 1.39.51, Mark Whitehouse 59th in 1.40.08, Bev Dennis 60th in 1.41.36, Steve Rawlinson 62nd in 1.44.22 and Jo Billyard 63rd in 1.44.29.
On Sunday three Teignbridge Trotters took part in the Clarendon Marathon in Wiltshire. The race starts in Laverstock near Salisbury and follows the Clarendon Way to Warminster. The course was 95% off road and very muddy and slippery in places but conditions on the day were perfect. Roger Hayes, running in his 90th marathon, was 34th in 3.41.34, Phil Perry clocked 4.20.27 and Mark Wotton 4.28.11. There were 397 finishers.
Also in Marathon action at the weekend were Emma Sidebotham and Simon Boobyer who ran in The Jersey Marathon as representatives in a 5-man strong Devon and Cornwall Police team. The race forms part of the National Police Championships. Simon, injured right up to July this year lacked distance training but still managed a time of 3.41. Emma who was also underprepared (lazy build up she says!) for the event finished in 3.48.
Eight Trotters took part in the Churston Flyer organised by South Devon Athletics Club and run over a testing 5 mile course. As another championship race this yielded good points for those taking part with so many opting for the Teign Valley Toddle. Leading the team back was Daryl Tarquin Milford 8th in 28.43. Nick Stevens was 10th in 29.40 followed by Gary Clark 33rd in 32.31 and John Tweedie was 34th in 32.29. Recently married Travis Wood was 41st in 32.59 and Neil Pallant was 67th in 36.00. Our two lady representatives were Tamsin Cook 100th in 40.04 and Catherine Barnes 120th in 44.21. There were 148 finishers.
Further afield in Hampshire on Sunday Rod and Lucy Payne competed in the 30th Alton Downland Challenge 10k. The race is run over an undulating mixture of roads, parkland, fields and woodland paths and started in chilly and foggy conditions. Rod finished 65th out of the 113 finishers in 54.01 and Lucy ran a fine race to finish 78th in 55.15 and claim a medal for 2nd FV55.
Lone Trotter Graeme Baker, still running superbly in his 72nd year, was in Cornwall for the Newquay 10k, an uphill out and downhill back course, on which he was 265th out of 518 finishers and second in his age category in a time of 50.02.
