On Boxing Day fourteen Teignbridge Trotters tied themselves together in pairs to take part in the Shaldon 3 legged race.
The race is unashamedly total madness and mayhem but with runners there is always an underlying competitive streak. This event is no exception and with drinking involved it is little wonder that the Trotters generally excel.
This year's Trotter teams were:
- Chairman 'Pirate' Rog and Debbie 'Mini-Mouse' Clarke
- Jan 'nosebleed' Caunter and Lady Chair Oodie
- 'Handicap Queen' Steph and Stew 'Fell runner' Dunn
- John 'Skinns' Skinner and Ian 'Lighthouse' Langler
- Suzie 'Double-Barrel' Ashleigh Thomas and Mystery Partner??
- Anna 'snapshot' Langler and Vicky 'Go faster' Semen
- Daryl 'Tart-queen' Milford and Lady 'Monkey' Ludlam
The course starts and finishes at the Ness Hotel and encompasses all six of Shaldon's pubs, including the newly re-opened Shipwrights (with Trotter connections it is well worth a visit), At each hostelry a half pint of beer has to be downed before the fancy dress clad competitors are allowed to move on.
The teams of Monkey and Tarqs and Skinns and Lighthouse were hounding each other throughout for ultimate supremacy, albeit this is testimony as much to drinking ability rather than athletic prowess but in the final shake up Trotter dominance was threatened by a team from Torbay AC. The party poopers managed to overcome Skinns and Lighthouse but despite a spirited challenge on the tough Ness Hill loop section could not vanquish our all girl team of Tart-queen and Lady Monkey (nice legs - shame about the faces).
Monkey is now the grand slam holder of both the Teignmouth and Shaldon 3-legged titles having won the Teignmouth race back last summer.
The day is all about fun and that was had by all in abundance.
We can all now look forward to 2011 and some 'top-action' racing
